How to merge multiple contacts in the Messages app on iPhone & iPad

Every now and then a friend or contact might change their phone number, email address or Apple ID. This usually isn’t a problem, but if you’ve been talking to them using the Messages app you might suddenly see multiple chat entries appear for that contact. It can be annoying, frustrating and confusing in equal measures. Thankfully, it’s really easy to merge these chat windows together to tidy up the Messages app. Here’s how it’s done:

Open one of the multiple chat windows, then tap the blue Contact button in the top right corner:

In the small drop-down menu, tap the Info icon:

Then select Add to Existing Contact:

You’ll see your entire contact list appear on-screen. Scroll or search for the existing contact, then tap on their entry. Tap on the add phone or add email buttons to update the contact with the new details:

Once added, tap the blue Done button in the top right corner and the two chat windows in the Messages app should merge into one.
